MSI wasn’t always a gaming brand, but gaming is what got it on the map and currently, gaming is what puts it in the minds of the mainstream. Today we’re covering the entire MSI Gaming laptop lineup, to see what’s what with MSI in 2024, as well as how they compare to the rest of the manufacturers. We’ll start with the Titan, a gaming behemoth that can almost certainly replace most gaming desktops out there, go down to the mid-range (aka the Crosshair), as well as get down in the mud with the privates of the MSI army, aka the Swords, Katanas, Cyborg, Alpha, and Bravo laptops.

The last few are MSI’s more affordable devices, which are arguably the most important, so it’s crucial that MSI gets them right. The competition in the space is severe, with laptops like the Lenovo LOQ 15 and the Acer Nitro V 15. For 2024, MSI is leveraging AI as a selling point, labeling the 2024 lineup as the beginning of the AI Era of Computing.

Maximizing the performance of gaming devices is crucial for getting the most bang for your buck, which is why we created our Max Out series of eBook Guides, which show you how you can make your gaming laptop more powerful, leveraging techniques such as undervolting and overclocking, among others.

MSI Titan 18 HX (A14Vx)

The biggest and baddest of all MSI laptops, we’ve got the unrelenting Titan 18 HX. It’s got a new design for 2024, utilizing a Magnesium-Aluminum chassis, a smart choice. Obviously, price doesn’t matter with the Titan, as the price starts at $5000. It will reduce the overall weight of the laptop, as magnesium is super tough so you don’t need much of it for the bodywork. This doesn’t mean that the Titan is very light, but it’s light for the hardware that it brings, weighing 7.9 lbs (3.6 kg). The profile ranges from 0.94″ (24 mm) on the front and 1.25 ” (32.05 mm) at the back.

In terms of performance, you’ve got the best combo possible, a Core i9-14900HX and a 175W RTX 4080, backed up by 192GB of DDR5 RAM and a massive 99Wh battery.

The display options are super crisp too, with a resolution of either QHD+ or 4K UHD+. They are 16:10, with the QHD+ unit using an IPS panel and ticking at 240Hz, while the 4K display has a MiniLED panel which promises higher brightness and contrast. It’s not as quick, though with only a 120Hz refresh rate. The cooling might be the most impressive, with a vapor chamber and legs on the bottom that raise the laptop a bit, for even better airflow.

There’s also a mechanical keyboard, with CherryMX low-profile switches, giving you the same tactile feedback. The touchpad is haptic, so no real clicks. However, the surface can change colors, with full RGB support.

MSI Raider 18 HX (A14Vx)

One step below the Titan sits the Raider series, the second most powerful laptop in MSI’s lineup. This is the MSI Raider 18 HX, powered by Intel 14th Gen HX-series processors and RTX 40-series graphics. On paper, the CPU, GPU, and Display selection are all the same. So where’s the difference between them? Well, first of all, the total power of the laptop has dropped down to 250W, split between the CPU and GPU.

The Tiran has a total power of 270W, so if the GPU stays at the same 175W power limit, this means that the CPU will get overall less power in the Raider than in the Titan. However, the Core i9-14900HX is super powerful that you really might not notice the difference. Sadly, we haven’t been able to review these two laptops, but a comparison would be very interesting, as we’re curious to see how much of a difference 20W can make when it comes to all-out performance.

MSI Raider A18 HX (A7Vx)

In the recent year or two, when most companies create an AMD version of their laptops, they stick an HS-series chip and call it a day. MSI has done the new AMD-based Raider differently, by including the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D. Yes, 3D V-Cache has made its way onto mobile chips, and it is so good that it managed to put the Ryzen 9 in the #3 spot of our Top Laptop CPU Ranking, beating out the Core i9-14900HX and anything else Intel could throw at it. The GPU options are the same, with up to a 175W RTX 4090. Sadly, the MiniLED display isn’t available here, but it should be, as AMD enthusiasts have the right to be blessed by the increased brightness and contrast ratio.

Compared to the Titan, the Raider has a more conventional cooling system with 2 fans, 6 heat pipes, and raised feet, which MSI tastefully called 3D Cooling Stands. They elevate the bottom panel so it’s not sitting flat on the table, providing more airflow to the cooling, which in turn, increases performance.

MSI Raider GE78 HX (14Vx)

If you want a smaller Raider, the GE78 reduces its screen size to 17 inches. Does that mean that it’s more portable? Not at all! It still weighs 6.8 lbs (3.1 kg) and has a thickness ranging from 0.90″ – 1.13″ (22.85-28.75 mm). It’s still a very beefy laptop, with beefy components inside. All the Intel-based Raider laptops bring the Core i9-14900HX into the fold, along with 175W RTX Graphics.

Another trend that’s basically become mainstream for all gaming laptops is 16:10 displays. Here we have two options with a 17-inch diagonal and either Full HD+ or Quad HD+ and either 165Hz or 240Hz refresh rate. Personally, the higher resolution you go, the lower the refresh rate should be, as updating all these pixels 240 times a second can be taxing on the GPU. Unless you’re a professional esports player, in which case you’ll probably play on a bigger external monitor, we don’t see a reason for a QHD panel to go above 165Hz.

MSI Raider GE68 HX (14Vx)

With the same formula, but in an even smaller 16-inch chassis, the Raider GE68 might be the most popular Raider laptop out of the whole bunch. It’s still plenty powerful, with the same specifications. It’s not super light, however, it has the dimensions of a smaller 15.6-inch device, as the bezels have been pushed to be as thin as possible.

While the laptop is still not very light at 6.1 lbs (2.75 kg), the smaller size means it can fit in most laptop bags without an issue.

What’s important, is that here we get the MiniLED display that’s lacking on the bigger Raider, which means games and all other content can look even better. Most high-end gaming laptops come with displays that show a wide range of colors, so the Raider GE68 can surely tackle creator work with ease.

MSI Stealth 18 AI Studio A1V

The Stealth laptops were previously gaming devices with decent performance and a more subdued design. This meant next to no RGB. Basically, they were made for the gamers who didn’t want to be identified as gamers. Since the overall design concept of gaming devices moved in that direction, the Stealth series needed a new niche. It turns out that gaming hardware is pretty damn good for content creation, so the Stealth devices became the Stealth Studio. For 2024, the “AI” was added to signify the AI-readiness of the notebook.

The 18-inch model features an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H CPU as well as four GPU options, ranging from an RTX 4060 to an RTX 4090, all with a 140W power limit. You also have the same display selection from the Titan, with an additional panel for the base configuration. For an 18-inch machine, it’s decently portable, weighing 6.2 lbs (2.79 kg) with a profile between 0.78″ – 0.94″ (19.9 – 23.99 mm). The laptop brings a wide port selection, including an SD card reader and plenty of Thunderbolt and regular USB ports, as any self-respecting creator laptop would.

MSI Stealth 16 AI Studio A1V

The same formula, but in a smaller package, the Stealth 16 AI Studio drops the weight to 4.4 lbs (1.99 kg) and the thickness to 0.79″ (19.95 mm). In terms of hardware, you lose some GPU power, with the power limit of the 40-series GPUs dropping to 105W. Once again, the display selection is the same. We think this is the best laptop of the Stealth Studio series, as we’ve seen the higher-powered 140W cards not reach said TGPs, so you might not lose that much performance by selecting the 16-inch version.

At the same time, you’re getting more versatility, with an additional Core Ultra 7 155H CPU option, as well as a much lighter chassis that won’t be a hassle to carry around with you. The massive 99Wh battery also stays here, so with the supposedly less powerful GPUs, the battery life should see improvement when it comes to more intense workloads.

MSI Stealth 14 AI Studio A1V

The smallest of the Stealth Studio series, the 14-inch laptop makes small cutbacks compared to the 16-inch model when it comes to configurations, keeping the displays, and the CPU options. There is less GPU variety, with the RTX 4050, 4060, and 4070 being available, with a slightly lower 90W power limit.

The crazier thing is how portable this device is, considering the hardware that it provides. It weighs only 2.2 lbs (1.00 kg) and has a profile between 0.78″ (19.9 mm) – 0.85″ (21.8 mm). Inside the chassis, there’s a vapor chamber, as well as stereo speakers, with 2 tweeter units on the base and 4 woofer units on the bottom panel. There’s a slight change in the displays. Instead of the 4K panel, there’s a 2.8K 120Hz OLED panel, which brings super deep colors and an infinite contrast ratio.

MSI Stealth 14 AI Studio (A1Vx) in-depth review

For power users and professionals who travel a lot, a small yet hardware-potent machine could be a dream come true. The MSI Stealth 14 AI Studio A1V has all the needed mouthwatering features to be a compact powerhouse for gaming or content creation. It relies on 28W Intel Raptor Lake-H CPUs and NVIDIA Ada Lovelace graphics cards with 90W TGPs. The device isn't hefty but it's not super thin at the same time since it has a big vapor chamber cooling and two SODIMMs under the hood. You don't get a plethora of connectors but the included ones are up to date including Thunderbolt 4 and an HDMI 2.1. [...]

Pros

  • Good performance for a 14-incher
  • 2x SODIMMs for up to 96GB of DDR5 memory
  • 1800p resolution + 120Hz refresh rate (SDC419B)
  • Full sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage + accurate color with our "Design and Gaming" profile (SDC419B)
  • High max brightness of 636 nits in HDR and 404 nits in SDR mode + infinite contrast ratio (SDC419B)
  • Great per-key RGB keyboard by SteelSeries + smooth and accurate touchpad

  • The Core Ultra 9 185H can maintain 3.6 Ghz / 2.9 Ghz P and E core clock during heavy loads
  • The optional RTX 4070 offers 90W TGP and ~2000 MHz during gaming
  • The MSI Center offers plenty of customizations
  • Thunderbolt 4, 1x Type-C port + HDMI 2.1
  • Vapor chamber cooling
  • 1080p IR Web camera with privacy shutter
  • MUX switch
  • Compact and powerful
  • The fans don't spin in idle if the GPU temperature is below 50°C

Cons

  • Loud fan noise + the keyboard feels hot to the touch during gaming in "Extreme Performance"
  • The "Balanced" preset offers just a ~45W GPU TGP
  • No G-Sync or NVIDIA Advanced Optimus support
  • Just three USB ports
  • Strange fan hysteresis under heavy CPU stress alongside high chip temperature
  • PWM usage (SDC419B)

MSI Vector 17 HX (A13Vx / A14Vx)

Now we’re entering the upper mid-range of MSI’s gaming notebooks. The Vector, previously known as the Leopard, has always been a great laptop. The current 2024 variant offers really powerful components just like the Raider, however, it scales back on the display selection, to bring the price down by a bit. Cooling this beast isn’t a problem, as the Core i9 CPU and 4090 Graphics get the Cooler Boost 5 solution, with 6 heat pipes and 2 fans, which gives you enough copper to keep everything chilly.

This laptop is for more than gaming though, as it can act as a whole studio once you utilize all the available ports, you can plug up to three monitors that are enough to handle all your gaming and productivity needs. The I/O is full, with some highlights including Thunderbolt 4, an HDMI 2.1 FRL for up to 8K@60Hz, and an SD card reader.

MSI Vector 16 HX (A13Vx / A14Vx)

If you want the power of the Titan but need a more portable device for a lower price, the Vector 16 is the right laptop for you. It can be outfitted with the same components as the Titan, including the 24-core Core i9 and a 175W RTX 4090. You do lose the MiniLED displays, as well as the vapor chamber, but the cooling that we have here does a fantastic job, with tons of copper heat pipes, spreaders, and heat sinks.

We’ve reviewed the 13th Gen Intel model and we have exactly 0 qualms when it comes to how it performed, sustaining 174W on the RTX 4080 GPU model that we purchased. The only shortcomings of the laptop are not performance related, and rather small. The display doesn’t cover complete sRGB coverage, so if you want a laptop for content creation and gaming, unless you plan on working on an external monitor, the Vector might not be for you.

MSI Vector 16 HX (A13Vx / A14Vx) in-depth review

Nowadays, you can find a lot of high-end devices in a 17-inch or 18-inch form factor. On the other hand, if you want a smaller machine with top-end hardware, your choice is fairly limited. Still, with the aid of Vector 16 HX A13V, MSI tries to prove that a 16-incher can perform as well as some of its bigger siblings with larger displays. Specs-wise, the device is a true monster. You get a choice of Intel Raptor Lake HX CPUs with tons of cores and the latest and greatest NVIDIA Ada Lovelace GPUs with the highest possible power limits. Display-wise, there are two IPS variants. The base one is[...]

Pros

  • Great performance for a 16-inch machine
  • 2x SODIMMs + 2x M.2 slot (one is for Gen 5 SSDs)
  • 144Hz refresh rate (Innolux N160JME-GTK (CMN1621))
  • PWM-free + very good contrast ratio (Innolux N160JME-GTK (CMN1621))
  • Superb SteelSeries keyboard
  • Solid build quality
  • High CPU and GPU clocks under heavy loads or gaming
  • The MSI Center offers plenty of customizations
  • Modern port selection + SD Express Card Reader
  • Decent battery life
  • Quality audio

Cons

  • Bulky and heavy
  • Low sRGB coverage (Innolux N160JME-GTK (CMN1621))
  • Plastic base
  • No G-Sync support

MSI Pulse 17 AI C1V

The Pulse series of laptops is one level below the Vector. Comparing the two, you can see that the Pulse has less powerful CPU options, combining the Core Ultra 9 185H and up to 140W RTX Graphics (either the RTX 4060 or RTX 4070). We don’t see this as a bad thing, as the cooling has been dialed back a bit too, with 5 heat pipes instead of six.

Ultimately, this is a proper mid-range machine that can still offer amazing performance and be an overall great laptop, thanks to the 16:10 displays. Previous iterations of the Pulse have offered pretty wide color gamut coverage and great accuracy, so if this Pulse 17 brings the same QHD 240Hz display, you can get a powerful Creator laptop with a rather big gaming flair.

One caveat about this notebook is the heft, as it weighs  6.2 lbs (2.80 kg) and has a profile of up to 1.16″ (29.7 mm) at the back. The design has changed a bit, with more colors on the base and a not-so-subtle Pulse wordmark on the touchpad.

MSI Pulse 16 AI C1V

The Pulse 16, slightly smaller than the Pulse 17, brings the same design, components, and display selection. Is it more portable than the Pulse 17? Yes, it is, but is the difference noticeable? The Pulse 16 is 0.7 lbs (300 grams) lighter and 0.07″ (2 mm) thinner.

Nothing has changed from the Pulse 17 to the Pulse 16, as even the 90Wh battery stays the same. MSI’s AI enhancements are put front and center, thanks to the Ultra-series of processors, which feature an NPU on the inside, for local machine learning. The big tool that they market is the MSI AI engine, which detects what apps are running and automatically adjusts the hardware power limits, as well as cooling for optimal performance. As of right now, we don’t see it as a big improvement, but the more the AI trains and develops, it has the chance to become much much better in the future.

MSI Crosshair 17 HX D14V

The same chassis but with a different CPU, why not? This is probably what MSI was thinking when designing the Crosshair series for 2024. Replacing the Core Ultra series of CPUs with the 14th Gen HX series will yield more performance. You’re also getting the AI engine here, as well as the AI Artist, which is like a local version of Midjourney or Dall-E. MSI says that it’s able to generate images locally, however speed and available features are very dependent on the configuration.

For a device called the Crosshair, you expect the smoothest gameplay in FPS games. The display is certainly made for fast-paced gameplay, featuring a Quad HD+ 240Hz IPS panel. The weight and thickness of the laptop are the same as the Pulse 17. The Crosshair laptops also get an Ethernet port, which is strangely missing on the Pulse devices.

MSI Crosshair 16 HX D14V

The Pulse 16, but with an HX-series CPU and a LAN port, the Crosshair 16 is the more powerful version of the aforementioned laptop. There have been some stylistic choices to make the Crosshair a bit different from the Pulse, with a bit more color on the MSI logo on the lid.

The keyboard brings a lot of color, with a 24-zone RGB backlight. It’s not exactly a per-key backlight, however, the amount of zones is more than enough. Also, most of the time you just need to see what you’re typing and don’t need a whole light show below your fingers.

MSI Sword 17 HX B14V

Now we’ve reached the budget segment, where the Swords and Katanas reside. We’ll start with the Sword 17 HX B14V. As the name suggests, this laptop packs an HX-series processor (only one), the Core i7-14700HX. It’s a powerful chip, currently #8 in our Top Laptop CPU Ranking. For graphics, you can get up to an RTX 4070, but with a lower 105W power limit, which requires less powerful cooling and can extend the battery life of the 65Wh battery.

The cooling situation of the Sword 17 is the same as the one on the Crosshair and the Pulse laptops, with 5 heat pipes, 6 heat vents around the sides, as well as big intake grills on the bottom. During more intensive workloads, you need more elevation to draw more air into the cooling setup. MSI has increased the height of the rubber feet, which should allow the laptop to breathe more freely.

MSI Sword 17 HX (B14Vx) in-depth review

The MSI Sword devices are a step down compared to their Stealth, Raider, and Vector siblings. This means you have to be ready to spot some compromises here and there in terms of performance or build quality. Today we are going to inspect the Sword 17 HX B14V in an almost max-out configuration. In our case, the device that we have bought isn't cheap by any means necessary. Speaking of hardware, the Intel Core i7-14700HX is the only CPU option for this MSI series. Actually, that's good. This 20-core 28-thread chip has enough power for content creation, photo / video editing, or gaming. The g[...]

Pros

  • Good gaming performance
  • 2x SODIMMs + 2x M.2 slot (one is for Gen 5 SSDs)
  • 1600p resolution + 240Hz refresh rate (AUO84A6)
  • PWM-free (AUO84A6)
  • Full sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage + accurate color with our "Design and Gaming" profile (AUO84A6)
  • High max brightness (452 cd/m2) and fast pixel response times (7 ms) for an IPS panel (AUO84A6)
  • Great 24-Zone RGB Gaming keyboard with long key travel, NumPad, and big Arrow keys
  • Solid build quality
  • High GPU clocks (~2400 MHz) under gaming given the 115W TGP
  • The MSI Center offers plenty of customizations
  • 4 USB ports + HDMI 2.1
  • Decent battery life for a 65Wh capacity
  • Quality audio
  • MUX switch
  • The fan noise isn't intrusive in "Extreme Performance" mode

Cons

  • Bulky
  • Low CPU clocks (~2.70 GHz / 2.00 GHz for the P and E cores) and power limit (80W) under any kind of load
  • Plastic chassis
  • No G-Sync or NVIDIA Advanced Optimus support
  • Three Gen 1 Type-A ports

MSI Sword 16 HX B14V

The smaller Sword 16 is pretty much the exact same laptop but with a smaller form factor. Performance is the same, as the CPU and GPU selection, the displays, and the cooling are all the same too. However, the chassis is smaller and more compact, weighing only 5.1 lbs (2.30 kg). Overall, we’ve seen a trend of gaming laptops becoming heavier, with manufacturers reserving the thin and light gaming devices as more special and outfitting them with more powerful hardware to charge a higher price.

By far the most surprising feature of the Sword laptops is that they come with the same displays as the Crosshair and Pulse laptops, which makes them very suitable for handling color-related work. MSI promises 100% DCI-P3 coverage and its website, but as always, we’ll have to put the laptops through our lab to be sure.

MSI Sword 16 HX (B14Vx) in-depth review

If you think that the MSI Sword 16 HX B14V is just a smaller version of the Sword 17 HX B14V, you are actually (almost) right. We have already reviewed the 17-ich version and yes, both machines look, feel, and perform nearly the same. This means that with the 16-incher you get a 20-core Intel Core i7-14700HX (or an i7-14650HX) alongside 115W NVIDIA RTX 4000 graphics cards. The upgradability is good and even one of the M.2 slots is for Gen 5 NVMe drives. The port selection remains decent at best. The base display is a 1200p unit with a 144Hz refresh rate. If you can stretch your wallet, you [...]

MSI Katana A17 AI B8V

The Katana laptops for 2024 are offered with AMD 8000-series HS chips. These have the classic 8-core 16-thread layout, as well as a dedicated XDNA architecture for the NPU. What does this mean for gaming performance though? Not a lot, as the GPU is still the driving force behind your games. On that front, you get up to 105W RTX 4070, with the 4060 and 4050 also being available.

In terms of displays, there’s only a Full HD IPS panel with a 144Hz refresh rate. MSI has used such panels for a long time and we’ve become quite familiar with them. They don’t offer a good color gamut, so don’t expect to handle color-related work with ease. However, for a student who wants good performance and efficiency for a low price, you can’t go wrong with a Katana.

MSI Katana A15 AI B8V

The Katana A15 AI B8V offers a classic 15.6-inch notebook form factor, with the same components as the Katana 17. It’s one of the lightest laptops of the bunch, with a weight of 5lbs (2.25 kg). Compared to the Intel 14th Gen HX-series chips, these 8000-series HS processors don’t perform as well, however, efficiency is through the roof. Inside the laptop, there’s a 53.5Wh battery, which further contributes to a lighter laptop.

The combo of this CPU and battery should deliver okay battery life, but it all depends on how MSI has done the power management and how much the integrated graphics come into play. Katana laptops have always been victims of corner-cutting, but such is the fate of the budget gaming laptop. Fortunately, things are improving with every year, and laptops keep getting faster, and more efficient, with better displays and better features.

MSI Cyborg 15 AI A1V

The MSI Cyborg is a fairly recent addition, debuting in 2022. This version is powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, with 16 cores and 22 threads. It is the lightest MSI Gaming laptop, with a weight of 4.4 lbs (1.98 kg) and a profile of 0.90″ (22.9 mm). The GPU selection is on the lower end, with either an RTX 4050 or a 4060, both running at 45W. This is rather low, so don’t expect gaming performance to be on the level of the Katana or the Pulse.

While on one hand, this combo seems low-powered in terms of graphics, it will still do wonders in lighter titles like CS2, League of Legends, Valorant, or any other competitive online game. What you can expect from this laptop is very good efficiency, as the CPU has a base TDP of 28W, so during low-power use and where you’re not pushing it to the max, the 53.5Wh battery can last for quite a while. The charger that it comes with is also decently compact at 120W, so you can take it anywhere with you.

MSI’s lineup is full of powerful laptops, however, most of them really overlap with one another. The Vector and Raider series might as well be one and the same, while the Swords, Katanas, and the other weapons need some distinction from one another. The best laptops of the bunch, the Stealth Studio devices, truly are in a league of their own however, offering performance, style, and tons of features that both gamers and creators can use daily.
